Eileen
Gray (1878-1979), was born in Ireland and lived in Paris. She was famous
for furniture and architecture. She was known as the designer of the time. Her
work was functionalist and modernist. Her work was characterised by geometric,
simple shapes whic influenced many famous designers. She participated in
important design movements such as Art deco and early modernism. She was influenced
by traditional arts such as Japanese lacquer work. Her work considered
functionalism and formalism, and many pieces were characterised by folding,
fanning out and collapsing. She explored the use of new materials in different
ways. The Bibendum chair was characterised by geometric shapes and the use of new
materials (chrome and polished steel tubing). The E1027 house (1925) has
interesting
and hidden, attractive empty spaces. It looks like a white ship and everything
inside it was designed by Gray.
